Christmas Day Box Office

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas at the movies! This was a huge Christmas box office. Les Misérable took the top spot with over $18 million. Quentin Tarantino’s newest film, Django Unchained, was close behind with $15 million. Prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, grossed $11 million, still strong during its second week in theaters.  This is one of the best Christmas Day openings in recent years.

Les Misérable’s $18 million was the best opening since Sherlock Holmes in 2009. The Warner Brothers’ release grossed $24.6 million. Avatar came in second that year with $23 million. Avatar was released December 18, 2009, taking The Hobbit route by hitting theaters the week before Christmas. After a strong showing from the top three, the list drops off.

The utterly ridiculous looking comedy, Parental Guidance, earned over $6 million. Tom Cruise’s newest film, Jack Reacher, brought in another $5 million on Christmas Day. The  “sort-of sequel to Knocked Up” This Is 40 grossed $4.3 million. This rounds out the top six for the Christmas Day box office.

This is a huge season, as most of the award contenders are not hitting theaters. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association released nominations for the Golden Globes on December 13. The awards will be handed out on January 13, 2013. Notables nominated are Les Misérable in the Best Picture – Musical or Comedy and Lincoln, Argo, and Zero Dark Thirty in the Best Picture – Drama category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce their nominees on January 10, 2013.
